National Marine Debris Monitoring Program
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Center for Marine Conservation have developed a national program for monitoring marine debris. The National Marine Debris Monitoring Program is a five year study designed to determine the sources of litter on the beach. The amounts and types of litter are recorded and the data is sent to a center in Washington DC. The information gained through this program gives researchers a better understanding of national trends in the sources and types of marine debris. For more information see the National Marine Debris Monitoring Program website at www.cmc-ocean.org STSTI is also involved in getting recycling on all beaches. We are a state representative for America Recycling Day and affiliated with Nani O' Wananai and Keep America Beautiful.
Save the Sea Turtles International has coordinated the Beach Clean Ups on the North Shore of Oahu for four years with the goal of continuing this national program permanently in the state of Hawaii and all of it's beaches. Thousands of turtles an other sea life are injured or killed each year due to land or marine based debris. We hope to change that one beach at a time with Adopt A Beach. Teaching educational programs in our public schools is on going. We have many programs and need volunteers!
